Google Home Max White

When you think about home audio, Google undoubtedly isn’t the first brand that springs to mind, but the firm altered that with its Google Home portfolio (which it has since replaced with the Google Nest line of smart home products). Although the Nest Mini (previously the Home Mini) are technically speakers, it’s difficult to argue that they were designed with music listening in mind. They’re more useful for asking the Google Assistant questions and sometimes managing your smart home equipment. With the Google Home Max, such is not the case. This speaker is enormous, beautifully made, and stands out from the rest of the lineup since it was created with music listening in mind. The Google Home Max has now been officially retired, but is it still worthwhile if you can find one on sale?

Editor’s note: On April 27, 2021, this Google Home Max review was updated to reflect the device’s discontinuation, provide context for the sound quality section, add a content menu, and offer details on the Amazon Echo (4th Gen). Who ought to get a Google Home Max? those involved with the Google ecosystem. Without ever picking up the remote, if you have a Chromecast, you may ask your speaker to cast to your TV. For YouTube and YouTube Music, the same holds true. any active Google voice search userThe Google Assistant continues to provide the finest responses of any personal assistant if, like me, you often need to be reminded of fundamental facts. What’s more, it keeps getting better with time. Customers of Apple Music cannot listen. The Google Cast protocol is not supported by Apple Music as it is by Spotify, YouTube Music, etc. Therefore, you’ll need to use lifehacks to get to your Apple Music collection if you want to stream it. How does the Google Home Max feel to use?

A lot of cords and considerable confusion are often needed when setting up a home audio system. That has been gradually improving (particularly with some of the more costly choices like the LG SK10Y Soundbar), but the Google Home Max has no such issues. The power supply cord is the only cable that is included. Plugging the device in and using the Google Home app are all that are needed to set it up. It’s quite comparable to how simple Sonos’ app makes installation. You may follow the step-by-step instructions in the Google Home app to set up your speaker for streaming by connecting it to your wifi network. You should be aware that if you wish to connect it directly to a modem, WiFi is a need since there is no ethernet input.

All you have to do to connect to it after it’s linked to your network is click the cast icon that appears in the program you’re using. The majority of popular streaming services, including YouTube Music, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, and others, have built-in features that will trigger the button to appear in the app automatically. The Home Max can be spoken to, however, which is what distinguishes it as a smart speaker. With its small built-in microphones, the Home Max may be asked to play Feels Like Summer if you don’t feel like searching through your phone for that new Childish Gambino song. You can’t say “Yo Google” just yet, but “Okay Google” or “Hey Google” are perfectly acceptable alternatives. When I talked to the speaker while music was playing, I did have some difficulty with it hearing me, but I’ll get to that later. If you have a Google Chromecast, you can easily get anything to play on your TV. Simply directing the speaker to pause or restart playback will quickly and reliably stop and start the information.  However, since you are speaking to your TV, browsing is almost impossible. You must first decide what to watch before asking the Google Home Max to transmit it. If not, you’ll need to take out your phone.

Can you connect the Google Home Max to a soundbar? Yes, technically, but we wouldn’t advise it. As long as your TV has a 3.5mm output, you may use the Google Home Max since it includes a 3.5mm input on the rear. The audio on your TV will undoubtedly be louder if you connect it in this manner, but it doesn’t guarantee a better watching experience. Not only does a decent soundbar sound fantastic, but it also improves your experience. They do this either by supporting codecs such as Dolby Atmos or DTS:X or by being a component of a larger 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound configuration. The Google Home Max is a fantastic speaker, but it was made to enhance the quality of your music, not movies.

Is the Google Home Max a quality product? You’ll notice one thing about the Google Home Max right away: it’s large. The Home Max clearly surpasses them in size, even when compared to other smart speakers like the Amazon Echo (4th Gen) or Apple HomePod. No, it is not portable; it is 33.5 x 18.7 x 15 cm and weighs 5.3 kg. This was designed to be plugged in and placed on a wall. Surprisingly, the white version of the speaker we’ve been testing doesn’t have any stains or markings. The speaker’s enclosure is merely a smooth plastic (it also comes in black). However, the cloth chosen on the front is what really stands out. Although I’m sure that’s simply a fancy way of saying it doesn’t interfere with the sound, Google says it is “acoustically transparent,” and it at least feels pleasant to the touch.

There are four lights hidden inside the fabric, but they are only visible while you are making adjustments to the speaker. After you adjust the level or when it has finished listening to what you said, it will switch off briefly. The power supply input, a 3.5mm input, and a physical mute switch are all located around the rear. The mute option just shuts off the microphone, so it isn’t constantly listening for the word; it doesn’t stop music from playing. Speaking of which, I discovered that when music was playing at a volume of 75% or higher, the Google Home Max’s mics weren’t very good at picking up my speech. “Okay Google” often had me on the verge of shouting it, and even then there were moments when I just had to approach the device and manually turn down the volume.

I put this to the test by varying the level of Camilla Cabelo’s song Havana four times (25, 50, 75, and 100 percent). Then I listened to a tape of myself saying “Hey Google” while placing a different speaker 5, 10, 15, and 20 feet away from me. This isn’t the most scientific test ever created, but it does show how difficult it is for speaker microphones to pick up sounds at higher levels.

The Google Home Max looks amazing wherever you opt to place it in terms of appearance. Putting aside the specifics of the construction materials, the speaker’s straightforward and understated design is one of my favorites. The only other component of the Google Home Max is the switch on the back, which will almost certainly be facing the wall anyway. Since the majority of the functionality can be operated with your voice, there aren’t any knobs or buttons to detract from the sleek look. There is just one touch-sensitive area on the speaker’s side, which is used for volume control and pausing/resuming music. The touch-sensitive portion may be placed on top or on the right side of the speaker since you can position it either vertically or horizontally. One useful feature is that if you move the speaker, a voice will alert you if you accidentally flip it upside-down.

How loud is the Google Home Max? The Google Home Max excels in terms of sound quality. Google understood that if it was going to create a speaker this huge intended for music listening, it had to sound great. It chose to use six internal microphones and their own algorithms to enable the speaker to self-adjust its EQ based on where you set it as one approach to do this. The Google team calls this feature Smart Sound, and although I can’t vouch for it, I can say that the sound was constant enough that I couldn’t detect any difference between placing the speaker on top of a marble countertop or a table in the corner of the room.

The bottom end of a speaker will often sound magnified if it is placed in a corner, just like placing your phone in a cup. But the Google Home Max self-corrects to maintain constant sound quality. This is advantageous if you don’t feel like manually EQing your music since you won’t have that degree of control, but disadvantageous if you do. The Google Home app just offers the most basic bass and treble sliders.

Does Google Home Max spy on you? The term “spying” is so powerful. In other words, the Google Home Max isn’t secretly recording your conversations and sending them to a foreign government. However, it is always listenable. Before you place this item in your bedroom, you should be aware of a few privacy concerns. One reason is that, in the past, some Google Home recordings were released due to contractors who had access to the recordings. Basically, Google saves the audio clip when the Google Home is unable to grasp a specific command and uses it to study it in an effort to improve how the speaker recognizes everyday speech.

Contractors would then listen to footage in an effort to attempt to improve the Google Assistant’s comprehension of what was said (for things like accents and other speech patterns). It makes sense since everyone who has ever used a virtual assistant has at some time been misunderstood, but in reality, it means that real humans, not just algorithms, listened to the recordings. Even if the clips are obviously random and anonymous, it’s still rather unsettling. The microphone switch on the rear allows you to simply silence the microphone if you’d prefer not to take the risk. In the Google Assistant settings, you can also disable sharing. Even while this has essentially occurred with all of the major smart speakers, including Apple and Amazon devices, it is still unacceptable.

Do you want to purchase a Google Home Max? The Google Home Max has integrated itself into my life in a way that other devices haven’t, even if it’s difficult to advocate a smart speaker above a dedicated home music system or any other Bluetooth speakers. I confess that I already have a Google Home, but I mostly use it to set alarms and timers and ask it questions while I’m cooking. I will continue to do all of those things with the Google Home Max, but I now do them all while enjoying podcasts or music. I believe the Google Home Max is the best choice for most individuals looking for a powerful smart speaker with superb audio, but sadly, it was recently discontinued and is no longer available to purchase directly from Google. Having said that, it’s still a good idea to get one if you can.
