Since (I assume) you are the lone programmer in the question – you seem to “already know the answer”. It’s a bad idea to come to Quora and hope you’ll get a lot of blind praise for your situation and condemnation of the evil CEO.

It is VERY easy for a lone programmer to be blind to their own deficiencies.

So let’s look at this strictly from the CEO’s perspective.

He’s the new guy here – and it’s his first priority to understand what’s going on with the company. This is his job.

He only has your claim that the software is high quality – and, as you say, he doesn’t have enough knowledge to check for himself. With no other programmers there to peer-review your code – it’s an open-ended question.

Since (I presume) the entire company’s future depends upon this code – he MUST do “due diligence”.

In his position, what I would do would be to quietly hire a consultant to work off-site and to take a good hard look at this code and see whether it’s:

As high in quality as is claimed.

Plausibly likely to have taken four years of strenuous effort to write.

The result of a study like that might be a glowing review – or it might be a profound condemnation…from what you’re saying, it’s not a glowing review – in which case, the CEO is probably looking for your replacement right now.

In such cases, it’s better for morale if you get pissed off and leave than to actually fire you…hence no pay raises.

It’s unlikely that you’re the only person who’s seen this code…unless this CEO is a complete idiot – he’s going to have had it checked out by an independent contractor.
